way.
Welcome,
hustles.
This is Rick Messer.
I'm here with some people.
I spend a little bit of time with some fellow fun size er's today on the podcast.
Anthony is not here,
but we have a few other people from the fun size.
Ah,
they're gonna get on thio this episode and just talk about their experience at F occurrence.
This past past month,
we we all went to you epigrams mon Tues Um and it was really,
really incredible.
Really beautiful is in Lake Tahoe and,
you know,
design inspiration,
snowboarding and all that good stuff.
So let me just go running introduced.
You guys,
um,
first I have to my left.
Uh,
well,
I already said left Natalie.
I can't I can't go right now,
though.
They'll think I'm a liar.
This is Natalie.
Armored doors.
Natalie, I am Anthony's. Better half.
Oh, sick bird. What do you do? A fun size? Not
like Oh, that a mom, a partner and product designer?
Sure. Designer of products? Yep. And then we have, uh What's your name again? Do you do work final? I don't care. I just walked in. Uh, I'm Edgar Reese. N You don't know Spanish in there, but product designer here fun says
hi. Hello. My name is Fi Hong. For those if you don't know how to pronounce my last name. I'm
a product designer here.
Fun size.
It's good to have all you guys.
So I don't know,
Maybe we should preface this entire discussion with the weirdest experience that we had with staying in Reno the night before way stayed in a hotel called Circus Circus.
It was indeed a circus Way played.
Ah,
do we plant?
What was that game we played with the chicken like they had,
like,
a judge.
Janet.
A ride?
Yeah.
Drink catapult.
Yeah,
I'm trying accountable.
It's definitely the most accurate next game.
Um,
it was weird.
Weird place to stay.
But then the next day,
we flew in a region reno.
And then we went thio Tahoe,
and it was definitely less depressing.
Thin.
Reno,
Forget the good description.
Stuck in the in the eighties.
Yeah,
if you will.
It was a lot of fun.
It was weird town.
Anyway,
we got into,
uh,
Tahoe and man just driving up thio the hotel or whatever.
The Ritz Carlton.
Yeah,
that's crazy.
Crazy to tell e felt like a scene out of a movie.
Yeah,
I did.
Just just It was really,
really beautiful.
Um,
I guess probably the best way to get this going.
It's just,
uh maybe ask each of you.
Like what?
What you remembered about it and what was good.
And,
um and yeah,
well,
it's still fresh in our minds while the slopes air still close in our but but yeah,
yeah,
that's what I was already still already.
Uh,
yeah,
let's Let's let's hear it.
Not really feel like going first.
Yeah, sure. Um, maybe I wasn't ready. No, just, you know, I think the best part was just kind of getting to know more people. Like we went to the, uh, pickers in Hawaii. That was, like, 60 people. This time. It was, I think, damn petty said 300.
Hey, said that like a bunch of times way. Other people crazy.
Um, but yeah, it's cool to get to like your stories from other people that work at other product design agencies. Air just product design
companies. Was there one that set out to you? Not really.
I talked to so many people. I kind of I don't remember. But I remember after every conversation, I was like, Oh, wow, that's really cool.
Um, and media less the same question. Everybody, but, uh, what do you think? Hopefully I could time together because I think it is related to efforts. But what do you think you do? Um, we're all designers on this episode today. But what do you think you do? If you weren't designing,
I would probably have either a bakery and be like a baker, or, I don't know, some sort of small restaurant and be a chef or run like some sort of boutique that sells awesome things,
things,
something.
It's been a long time thinking about you.
Yeah.
Cool.
You want to hit it,
Eddie?
Shredding.
Getting hit It,
uh,
these weak,
I think for me like the best place going into their initially was the snow.
I mean,
I've always seen like means snow flurries here in Texas,
and that's nothing.
Yeah.
So sometimes not crazy.
Snow,
right?
Like yeah.
Really,
Really gets no.
So this no,
for one.
Um,
then for sure,
just I think it was my first experience with the fun size crew.
Yeah,
your first fun.
Sess tray as a pretty cool first trip,
man.
Yes.
Your first time.
Uh oh.
Let me go back to Natalie.
Real quick dancer.
This too.
But like,
it was your first time snowboarding.
Yeah,
Yeah,
yeah.
How'd you like it?
I
thought it would be easier. Oh, yeah. I grew up, you know? Yeah. Skateboarding. And I served in Hawaii, and sure, Yeah, like I couldn't my feet on a board at all times. It's fine.
It is weird is really, really weird learning
her barely got down the slope. I'm pretty sure I fell 50 times, and at one point, I just rolled over and gave up.
Yeah,
it was fun,
right?
Painfully fun.
Okay,
Edgar,
uh,
same question to you about Just Like what?
Yeah,
Didn't snowboard.
Because first of all,
I have balance issues on a skateboard,
so I decided to go skiing and you up first time.
Interesting.
A lot of falling like everybody else.
But it's fun,
man.
And after a while,
just got used to it.
I didn't learn how to stop.
I build,
so just fall down.
That's how you do a beat.
I don't want to hurt anybody.
So So what about like,
what's it out?
Like anybody that,
like,
got up and gave the talk or any like friendships made or like just people that conversation you had,
what what stood out?
What what's stuck with you from from going applicants.
There's a few people that I talked to that kind of maintain,
at least like shared contact information to keep in touch.
Um,
the conversations were a little like now they were saying Just you kind of made so many people.
You're just like a I'm already really bad with that would name.
So that was like an issue.
But aside from that,
I don't know.
I think that the last day just hanging out almost till the very like and
thinks no other skiing took
it out on me like I was like,
No,
but you guys all went sledding later,
right?
Yeah,
but now I think it was just that,
like meeting people.
I'm just talking like what they're doing.
It's always cool to meet like new people.
I'm always someone who's kind of stays away from like these,
like meet ups and conferences.
I'll go,
but I always stay with the same group of people.
So like first time ever was just like,
Hey,
I'm gonna go talk to somebody I don't know.
And it's cool how the conversations kind of evolved to us talking about stuff outside of work.
We talked about somebody like their favorite shows and whatnot,
and this is like stuff like that that I much rather enjoy.
Then sure,
you can talk about work for so long,
but I kind of like to know a person a little more than sure.
It's sort of like just your designer,
their designer.
That's just like common ground,
common ground.
So you just start there,
and then it's like,
What?
Who are you?
Be on that?
Yeah.
So that was That was a lot of fun to do for sure.
Yeah,
experience my first sauna with Oh,
you know so much from you and fi about it,
Anthony.
Yeah,
Close on,
of course.
Yes,
a lot like in 2014.
Fun size went up to Finland to work on a project with a Finnish company for a product called Aura,
which is a wellness.
Bring,
uh,
physical activity and sleep tracking with the wearable in the form of ring.
And they invited us into their culture by letting a sauna with them,
which was all kinds of fun and interesting.
But we talked about it all the time.
So once we found out at returns,
they had a sauna.
Were like,
Yeah,
let's go.
Yes.
Cool.
So was there any particular like person that went up and and,
like,
said anything like,
Do you remember anybody stand out at all to you from the speakers?
Yeah,
just a few.
Like towards the very end.
The couple that started unspool Ash on Splash for sure.
Just cause I mean,
we've all,
like,
been exposed to that.
I've used it.
And it was just It was just an interesting story.
They had an interesting story.
Yeah,
that's true.
So
that was That was a lot a lot of fun to hear. And I think I was just like,
a lot of that. Joel, I wanna butcher his last name. Be open. Manu, come in. Yeah. Yeah. So I had always heard from him from Fee and Andre and just like meeting him. Uh, yeah, dude was like talking
was just awesome. Hearing him talk about what, Like his perspective of, like, design and like users and
and all that.
So it was really interesting.
And for sure,
it was just That was awesome.
That's definitely one that stuck out to me.
Like more like a one on one,
right?
Yeah,
because,
Joel,
listen,
really speaking,
there he was,
you know?
So that was just a cool like speakers.
It was just like that one.
And I mean,
there's I don't number so much about it because I saw Honestly,
it all feels like a blur.
Yeah.
No,
I'm just coming back from it.
Okay,
if you weren't designing for a profession,
what do you think you'd be doing instead?
Something with drawing.
Yeah,
like,
I don't know.
Fees over here.
Deejay.
No,
I mean like that.
I think that's what started me.
And,
like the path of design,
at least was illustration so,
like doodles.
I always wanted to be like an animator for a while,
but then I really have,
like,
a passion for design.
So it's still like a hobby to me.
Yeah,
which is awesome.
But let's be something like that.
So maybe getting into music production?
Yeah,
maybe,
like,
just beats.
I've heard he throw down some some mixes,
may ask mixes yet?
No,
it's just that that's Ah,
that's like a self hobby. Like I keep that very personal like
Loki.
Yeah,
And it's just because it's something I I love.
Like,
I don't know sampling,
like,
especially like hip hop.
Just finding the original song.
Something fun house.
I do.
There's a song I love.
Yes,
there you go.
May.
So encouraging to see you.
Sort of like,
actually the combining your passions with,
like,
music and design and illustration,
And I can draw on like,
the goodness.
Thanks,
man.
Yeah,
I was also,
like,
very hesitant at first,
too.
Makeup.
I know.
It sounds like we're gonna make a business out of hobby.
Right?
Because I was scared I would lose.
Like the passion for it almost happened.
One time was I know I was,
like,
doing illustrations for,
like,
work.
And,
um,
I got to the point where I was,
like,
I'm not having fun anymore.
So this is dangerous.
Yeah.
Getting burned out.
Yeah,
especially like drawing,
which is something I did from,
like,
probably since elementary school.
Uh,
I don't want to burn that out,
so I still I learned how to use that like a little bit better.
So what was it that was burning out?
Like Not,
I guess,
Like keeping you inspired.
Like,
do you keep your finger on it?
Or was it just I think it was like a mixture of like,
Oh,
I can do illustration at a previous job,
and then they're like,
Oh,
that's cool.
What can you do this like illustration for this And this And this And then I was still drawing outside of work.
So she's,
like,
so exploding you if you wanna go,
because I
could have put a stop to it. But, you know, being naive and being like, uh, I love drawing and a dude
here once you kind of make that into,
like,
a business you almost don't know.
It just feels weird.
Oh,
I see you're saying like it Z almost like degrading,
like what it means to you to be like forced thio.
I don't want to be forced to,
and that's why I like I found that balance right now where it's like,
Oh,
this good look really cool.
With illustration on my own choice.
Let me bring it in here.
So now I'm a little more open to it,
and it's not expected of me,
which is awesome.
Yeah.
Yeah,
we're cool.
Uh,
okay,
Fi,
You're next,
man.
What's up?
How's it going?
Oh,
man.
You know,
recurrence.
Yeah.
What do you think,
man?
Man,
you have to cut this out. Um, first time snowboarding and just being in just that much snow was incredible. Just the views and hanging out with my friends was definitely an awesome combination. Um, and then having the ability to know, like, you know, people like Nick's later. And like all these huge names that you see on dribble on things like that, you're like, well own Viet in the same hotel as these guys. Um, I'm gonna try to capitalize on at least
meeting one of them. Yeah, like there's no way you're not going to be like running into these people throughout the whole weekends on the same place. One of the nicest guys I've ever met. Ex later.
Dude,
it's awesome.
Shut out to Nick's later.
Um,
yeah.
And then meeting Dan for the first time in like in person was just like I was pretty was What?
What do you call it?
I was star struck because I've been following his work since before I even decided to get into Web design.
Well,
that was a huge,
huge fan of his work.
And when he started doing a recurrence,
you know,
a while back I see a while back what it's like.
Here you go.
You've done so many of these that you're just like,
wow,
like I want to be a part of,
um,
you know,
this,
like,
these events.
And so when Montes came around,
um and,
you know,
the fun size team was kind of,
you know,
ready to go.
I was like,
All right,
this is this is our time to go,
and you just have fun.
So,
um yeah,
did that got on a snowboard?
We thought that we're going to be on the bunny slopes,
but we ended up not being on the bunny slopes,
and we ended up eating a lot of,
um,
a lot of face.
Um,
yeah,
because we have pretty girls.
I have a lot off unseen GoPro footage of me eating it.
Hopefully that yeah,
yeah,
yeah.
It is hilarious.
I'm ready.
I'm ready.
Tow to make compilation of all of that.
You went up that one time with me Rise, You and Matt and Oh, yeah, right. Yeah. You made it down, man.
Ugo Kanda es.
Oh.
So after,
you know,
after week,
we kind of got used to going down the I'm doing.
I'm doing air quotes right now.
The bunny slope started getting a little comfortable with that.
Um,
eight.
Enough.
Ate enough?
Um,
snow,
no Thio to be confident to be like,
You know what?
My body is so known that at anything at this point right now.
With what?
Okay,
what is pain Knowing that tomorrow?
Like we could go back out,
but that didn't end up happening.
Anyway,
Um,
I think I ended up going up the blue.
What?
We're supposed
to go up the blue our way in through some black sensibly like you kind of switch to Yeah, we were in a bad place. Yeah,
that was bad.
Yeah.
So I've never been down a mountain before,
and you know,
Rick And next later and Matthew are murders went down this one path,
and we're like,
Okay,
well,
you know,
apparently this is supposed to be just like the bunny slope,
but a little longer was not the case.
It was like a 40 degree,
like 40% incline.
Like I went down Moguls they don't even know what a mobile wasn't does suck.
I hit one,
did a front flip.
I felt like I did a front flip landing on my back.
You might have.
So yeah,
that happened.
And I hated myself the next day.
So
way woke up, but I just like, walked over to the bathroom. I saw Fi just like kneeling on his bed, like with arms, like kind of like a like a Tyrannosaurus rex,
and my body hurts. But it was a great story to tell everyone who asked how how the day was almost did a front flip home almost. I don't know. Maybe somebody got it. Got got footage of it
on the ski lift, weirdly like my favorite part about snowboarding is actually kind of wiping out because it's fine. And you're like, going and going and stuff and then use wipe out these kind of like the guys that killed on the slopes. Well, I mean, you know, you get going, then at some some point like you mess up or whatever, and you just can't sit there and look around. It's, like, catch your breath, you know, Just like this is beautiful,
man.
Yeah.
I remember when we were going down.
Rick was actually were kind enough to wait for me,
and then he took this.
We're going down this tiny little slope,
and I saw him taking,
like,
a left turn,
and he just went down it,
like,
normal,
like a normal person.
And I think that's cool.
That's why,
like that looks fine.
I'm gonna follow him.
And so I tried to cut.
I went out and all of a sudden I fell and I got stuck in a lot of fresh snow.
Yeah,
e I was probably knee deep in fresh powder,
and Rick was,
like,
just take off your snowboard.
It's like,
Oh,
my God.
You look so yeah, Yeah, they're kids that come up to your knee thing. Yeah, it was a good time in Tahoe or something,
man.
Probably.
Most likely.
Um,
yeah.
And then besides,
just like the snow sports just meeting,
meeting random people,
um,
was was pretty cool.
Met Nick's later finally got to meet,
uh,
Nick ain't and no And,
you know,
and I know from,
uh Oh,
my God.
Please help that out.
Um,
I'm following my note,
Nick.
You know,
from,
uh
oh. She like they were talking to that night for, like, a long time. Yeah. There are so many people I don't like. I don't know, I guess name. But this is such a good conversation. Yeah. Hey, worked with Ben Johnson. And Jean Ross Had elegance. Eagles. Oh, yeah. We just had been Johnson on the last
last episode.
Oh,
cool,
Cool,
Cool.
I like those guys.
It back,
That's what's funny is because I know this guy's from from Dribble because they're freakin amazing on there.
But we would always leave random Rick Ross gifts and,
like,
lyrics on each other's nice comments each of our shots.
And so we just started developing this,
like,
this strange Internet friendships and then nice when ever currents came around and I saw his name on the on the spreadsheet.
I was like,
I have to meet this person in person.
I r l um,
which is great.
And then I finally met Jean Ross in person.
A k Clark kit.
Yeah,
a k a
dude. Looks like Clark. I know I'm the only one that thinks that I heard stories about this guy. He could break you. It's like you're on the slopes to like he's like, I'm doing back. You're just like, Oh, I think I'm getting down this, OK? And then he literally, like, goes over your head like flipping like double front flail fish. I know you could do that. Free Willy saw. Yeah,
Yeah, he's He's nuts. And it was so, so great to meet him in person to you. And now that he's living in Austin, just, like, gotten a lot closer since
we talked to him since
he Yeah, I've been here. Yeah, we've been snapped video chatting with, like, the new feature. So it's nice weave. Yeah, he's moved up to you like best friend status on Snapchat. So way we've been talking a lot on there.
So according to Snapchat, you guys are best friends. Yeah, yeah. So he's like a temporary Yeah, I think
he's here for a few weeks ago. You guys should have him on the podcast. Oh, he's here. Uh uh um but yet, uh, the tops were really cool to, um, the young designers panels was pretty eye opening. Um Oh,
I forgot the little kid. Yeah, yeah, yes, that was really cool. You described that Just set it up. Like for people. I don't know. I'll have all of Dan Petty, uh, like, pre preview this podcast. And he couldn't tell me to cut it out of the trust tree if it No, I don't think the kid thing was trust tree thing. And I think the kid thing was was pretty awesome. Yeah, no has. Great. It's there's there's things we can't talk about it up occurrence because, like that one time
that one guy said he said something about this guy, Um, that I was like, What on he was feet? Yeah. Was that guy Um I guess we can talk about the kid thing over. Yeah, young designer. So I think Dan found this dad
and yeah, like, I don't know what those kids were doing there, but hey, hey, man. Maybe their support.
So when you have a rich when you have a rich dad,
I guess you can just bring him up. Theo, you should have said that Phone cut out, Josh. So we're not cutting anything else.
So apparently,
apparently,
uh,
they're they're these kids hanging out in the hallway,
and and I guess they were kind of asking about what was happening.
And Dan,
with the nice guy that he is,
ends up like just passing,
you know,
the bad to bring in his kids.
And during this time,
like,
there was,
like,
a pretty serious panel on stage.
And,
you know,
you know,
after they were done brought amongst age and these,
you know,
they just introduced themselves.
And they just started talking about,
like,
you know,
what?
Their ages were there,
like,
11 toe like 14.
Um,
and then,
you know,
Dan kind of opened it up.
Thio,
you know,
for the people in the audience were mostly designers and illustrators or just,
you know,
just creatives.
And general,
um,
you know,
what would you ask these kids?
And so,
you know,
when I was like,
what's your favorite app and all of them witches in a state like Snapchat And like,
Twitter and all these acts that we use,
you know that we tend to use a lot like these kids are using it to you.
So a
couple of surprises?
Yeah,
your answers,
but yeah,
they were all like,
really fun.
There's one kid that was just,
like,
grabbing the mind.
Just you know what?
Hey,
you guys need to do design this kind of because I'm really tired of these.
Make it free.
What?
You make it free with purchase is my dad.
Let me get a free out,
but he won't let me in at 11.
By the way,
I like the loophole to it.
Or is that a trick?
Um,
I think Well,
yes.
Well,
maybe I think like the kids know that they can do enough purchase.
I'll know,
man,
I'm sure you're ready for this is gonna be like you just,
like,
do sidetracked.
But could you guys imagine?
Like Caleb was born,
the iPhone six s was already out when Caleb was born.
Imagine being born.
And that,
like that,
the oldest technology,
like of from when you're a
born. And it's his rotary phone. Yeah, yes, yeah. Anyway, total my lung just collapsed. So old
now,
Total dad moment.
But anyway,
yeah,
back to the thing about the kids panel that was super surprising is super interesting,
man.
I couldn't believe,
like,
just how,
like,
uh,
insightful.
That turned out to be because he was just like,
what kind of abs to like.
You know what?
Your favorite APS and,
um,
they had a lot.
Obviously they had a lot of pictures because that's a thing like these devices that people are using everything about it so personal.
It's not just like that.
There's absolute and that's a good screen.
Or that the,
you know,
complete games.
I It's that that contains,
like,
this personal world,
most because it's their connection to the outside.
That's like,
Yeah,
I know I've had this conversation with a few people like Johnny,
for example.
It's the whole idea that,
like Snapchat,
is like they know how to use it on us like designers knowing patterns and whatnot and and how to design for,
like,
the user's that we were typically designing for.
It's It's a little hard.
Yeah,
that's your Aunt Bea.
Yeah,
it's a little harder that,
uh,
for them to
grasp how to use this. But like, you gotta keep in an account that these kids know how to do this, like just exploring. So that's that's their world. Snapshot
is their world. Yeah. Snapchat life. What about D s s say
No, I was just saying, I think a few months ago you're like, Forget snap chin. And now you're killing it allover all the face
halters Learn what? Correct. Like Like you have to unlearn how good app works and in light, then embrace how shitty upward I actually love it. It's weird that you seize They've repurposed like existing patterns for something like double tap someone's name too. Was it reply
or something? But now, you know, though, like right? Like now you know that like you almost stripped that away from you. And now you I think, like somehow don't use this, Rick, tell me how to take a photo and send it. Somebody did. I
hate how much we have talked about Snapchat on this, but like not even this episode, which is, like so much. Just like, uh, but anyway, these kids like snapshot, They also like the game. Uh, phone venture capital adventure Capitalist
was the most surprising thing. I think I think the whole Snapchat Twitter instagram as their favorite APS wasn't as surprising as when the 11 year old said When I grow up, I want to be a venture capitalist.
Yeah, that was not was really shocking. Interns. It's taking everybody's jobs. Yeah,
the other guy was
like little kids. Oh,
yeah. I want to be an app developer.
I want to be like a CTO oven app.
Development firm way eyes.
What's funny is like,
those kids all went up there like it was like,
this bunch of kids.
Um,
and they went up there after,
like,
you know,
the dude at,
um,
the main design design?
Yes.
I was going to say the guy at uber,
I think that was the same night.
And,
um,
that was that stuff was really cool,
too.
But it was just such a juxtaposition of,
like,
this do this just like,
Whoa,
the uber guy.
And it's like,
Okay,
some kids and I thought it was interesting to you about the kid panel was how they talked about YouTube.
Like this is all they do is watch YouTube like somebody asked.
You know,
if,
uh,
you could watch the same stuff you watch on YouTube,
just like on TV.
What?
He just watch it on TV,
and he's like,
No,
because I can sit.
However I want and watch it on my phone or ever anywhere.
Yeah,
Yeah.
I can't see any way that I want.
Like on the callously all like that.
Um,
that's weird to me.
I don't actually really like watching stuff on devices.
I actually prefer to just sit back and have it on.
It's weird.
How,
at least for me,
YouTube's kind of just like a secondary thing,
like I'll go check if someone's like,
Have you seen this?
I wouldn't go there if someone Yeah,
directly there.
And but some people,
like,
you know,
not just kids like,
you know,
that's like all the ones I like.
Uh,
that one.
I kind of understood because I have a younger brother
there right now. And he is, like, on YouTube all the time, Like funding videos. This funny video that
so No wonder your secret.
Keep in touch.
Right,
man?
Keep cool.
You always send me funny,
man.
I was setting this up.
Did that.
All of you guys are before me on that stuff.
Like somebody asked me one time.
Like,
where do you get,
like,
you know,
how do you keep up with,
like,
design or,
you know,
tech like,
whatever is going on,
that's cool.
I'm like,
man,
I don't like I just like I can barely keep up with our links channel at work.
You know,
it's all you guys just like pouring stuff in there constantly,
you know?
And like,
I don't even look in there anymore.
I just wait till I hear everyone laughing and I'm like,
Oh,
I better check.
The link channel is probably something funny.
There shows that then you when you just landed,
show it the new,
uh,
YouTube video.
We just sent you a compilation,
which was the only kid throws up.
Oh,
see that,
that one?
No.
Oh,
you mean my favorite video of all time.
The area That was pretty good.
I think this is a great exam.
I told Brian last night I was on phone and my friend Brian,
I was like,
Yeah,
there's this There's this really funny video about like,
these dudes are trying to say,
What's up,
dude?
But what they say he's like,
was it the Saudis?
I was like,
Yeah,
he's like,
Yeah,
I remember that Came out like,
two years ago.
I'm like,
Oh,
my God,
I can't.
I have no problem feeling behind with that stuff like I do not care.
Just wait till Caleb five. And he's just right. He's just ready to show you just a
man kills my little baby. Oh, baby. Caleb. Sorry. Preference. That. All right, Fi to bring it back, man. What? What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't designing,
man?
I'd be fry Cook.
Just kidding.
Um,
that's my background,
because family.
Um,
actually,
I think I would want to kind of talk back in the taking photos again,
back in the photography,
or even picking up senate photography.
Just,
like,
kind of learning that craft and art form a little bit more.
I think you mentioned that the other day and I thought that was super intriguing.
Then,
um,
you know,
some photography's kind of goes hand in hand with,
you know,
composition,
things like that.
And I was always been treated with that.
So I think I would wanna pick that up or,
um,
Gettinto
Cooking man. Oh, yeah, The culinary scene is Yeah, it's good for you know, he's already up.
Yeah, I know how to microwave a filet o just getting I don't
not do that. Not d'oh! Microwave fish. Filet mignon. That's probably worth. Yeah. What
are you saying? That first thing I know someone that microwaves there, eh? Sprick Just
getting no, man. You gotta calm out like it was getting No, I eat eggs. Love eggs. Finland, Finland, Every morning, man. I don't eat eggs. It's not like breakfast. Like all man receiving. E never felt so weird about eating eggs.
Oh, I'm just having everything eggs consecutively, like, every single day before. I know. Maybe maybe on this now, and I don't know, Um I think that was one of the only
Unless you want it. Like a big glass with, like, pickled raw salmon. Yeah, yeah. For breakfast. Do we ever, ever have episode talking about the phone? Damn it. No, We did it.
We did. Kinda. Maybe. I don't know. We should have. I think
there's something remember doing? I don't remember
doing all right. Next week. Next. That was almost
a year ago. I never wrote like, some articles, but And you did a video fee. Um, and yeah, when I was quite the experience.
Anyway, back to APP returns. So what about you? Recall was your favorite moment
or Yeah,
Um,
well,
I think,
uh I can think of,
like,
two or three.
Um,
you know,
I got to say,
honestly,
snowboarding was the absolute my absolute favorite part.
Even though the other parts of it were really,
really great.
I haven't Isis no word a lot when I was living back in Denver,
and I haven't been for about 13 years.
So,
um,
it was really,
really great to be back out in the open air and just see,
like,
pine trees again,
you know?
And,
uh um,
yeah,
I just I just love l of the freedom of it I love.
Like I actually love falling like its funds.
That right?
Like riding a bike?
Yeah,
actually,
was I was actually really worried because,
you know,
I'm a lot older May a little heavier.
I don't know gravity.
Either I've changed or Gravity's changed.
Let's say that,
but I was like,
Man,
I'm gonna get out there and just be like this fat old guy,
you know,
uh,
but no,
it was cool.
I got on.
I was like,
Oh,
all right.
Yeah,
I remember.
This is cool.
Um,
and uh was crushing and exits later was was kind enough,
Thio,
you know,
spend some time with me,
even though he was,
like,
way,
way ahead of me.
Um,
got to meet up with Dan Petty on the slopes for for a little bit.
Those guys were,
ah,
little bit better than me.
I was struggling to catch up,
but I was like,
Oh,
my God,
I'm supporting with Dan Petty.
This is like exactly what I pictured.
Wants what someone is like,
You want to go to Africa and some,
like,
am I gonna snow poured with Dan Petty and then you happen?
Sure did.
I've never even heard of the guy,
to be honest with you until until up Occurrence that the 1st 1 And to be there to be fair a little before that too.
I almost recognize him more for his work was like this designer that does this work.
Yeah,
but for me,
it's always,
like,
lasts lies.
And I never even really looked at his work.
I just heard he was,
like,
the creative director for Lux Ballet or whatever.
And then,
you know,
I've seen this stuff from,
like,
top notch,
but,
uh,
yeah,
you know,
for sure,
like
V definitely is always the one introducing me to designers, but I'll recognize somebody from like they're worth before I attach a name to it,
something like if someone says,
Oh,
look at this on an illustration.
Yeah,
I'm like,
Oh,
like in What's this later?
Yeah,
like you really know,
Like Nick's later stuff.
If you tell me like,
hey,
you see?
So and so's new work.
Like tell me of like,
an example of working with Yeah,
that's really cool.
Like,
if you can stand out in today like especially on trouble,
because everything,
you know,
if there was anything because people want to get good likes and they see that gets good.
Like,
if I just do this,
I get like,
CEO.
And so it's It's really hard to stand out,
but yeah,
once you spent all that time looking at all this stuff,
you start to see some of the people that have,
like,
a really personality at Jonathan's,
which is awesome.
Um,
yeah.
So I got to,
uh,
spend some time with with Nick,
who I had spent some time with before it Creative South.
So we sort of knew each other a little bit.
Andi,
we're just kind of like hanging out And,
uh,
you know,
probably wanna like the moments I think of when,
uh,
when I think of recurrence was like when we were on that,
Really?
You know,
Moe Gilley area started area kind of like just was like,
man,
I just,
like,
got down as fast as I could because I hate the moguls.
And I was just sore sitting there waiting for everyone in,
uh,
Nick was going and he came down like,
really hot and he like like he did a front like accidental front flip face plant right above where I waas.
And then he turned over and sort of just starfish And then,
like,
was sliding down the hill.
And so I'm just sitting there,
you know,
with my snowboard facing the bottom of the hill and neck just sort of like slides like this head first,
you know,
just like,
look over and his head just comes in for these separate,
uh,
really fun.
Um uh um Anyway,
uh,
this nobody screen.
Um,
and some people say,
like,
I been in a long time,
But some people say like that power that first day was the best.
Like that's super.
The one wheel guy,
one wheel.
So he was saying like he seemed like a avid snowboarder.
He says,
like the best powder.
It seemed like his whole life or something.
Um,
so I was like,
I was pretty.
You can't afford that to happen.
So the borderland on though?
Yeah,
same.
Like just following its fun.
Oh,
yeah.
I could see that the next day was rough for all three of us. Me, Which is what we end up sledding. Tubing. Tubing was awesome. Yeah,
five out of five stars really would do again.
Um,
I remember some interesting people talking like I seen that panel of,
like,
younger dudes that it started stuff up and we're having,
like,
success.
That was really inspiring.
Um,
also the splash one stood out to me as well.
Um,
I kind of like the husband,
wife,
like,
venture that they started,
like,
really?
Really?
You know,
I don't know where had this idea and I just caught on like crazy and the way they were able to,
you know,
really guide it to success is inspiring.
Want to shoot for them?
Yeah,
as well.
And it was good.
There's good stuff.
Um,
and I did really like what the,
uh,
uber guy can't think had said like he was super sharp.
And,
um,
you know,
they opened up Q and A,
and I felt like his answers were like not dodging anything.
Um,
so there's this thing with with hypocrites,
where there's really a WR like,
Look,
we're gonna allow ourselves to be vulnerable,
like up on stage.
And this only works if everybody can,
like,
agree that this is not like Tweedle quotes or anything like that.
Like this is us being vulnerable.
It only works if everybody's down,
too,
just like,
you know,
keep it,
keep it inside here.
So you know they can't We can't really talk about specifics.
But it was inspiring is inspiring to hear people be vulnerable.
People that,
you know,
we've all looked up to you,
their work and their even there,
you know,
just looked at the product companies that they work for and seen the good stuff that they do.
It made it feel like,
Oh,
they're they're human,
you know?
They're like us.
You know,
everybody's just trying to figure things out.
So I really appreciate every parent's for what it was and not in that respect.
And nobody talked about,
like,
design.
Really,
like everyone talked about,
like,
their challenges in their career or,
you know,
just stuff outside of,
like,
what?
We actually due process,
right?
And I felt like that was sort of the heart of epic currents.
I don't know if you know,
damn Petty would agree with that summary or not.
Maybe would,
I don't know,
but I felt like it was just more about design is like part of it,
but only because it's the common bond.
It's about that thing that is beneath that surface level and getting to know who these people are.
That's why I wanted to ask you guys what you want to do.
What if it was,
like,
not designed What?
What's beyond?
That was the rest of the story.
Um,
because I felt like that was like this special thing,
that epic Curtis was really,
really trying to do hard and be really personal and and open.
Two other quick highlights were,
um,
this great conversation with a dude named Travis.
Look do from Mast Branding Studio in Denver,
which is cool to meet some people from Denver because,
you know,
from there like talking about it.
But,
you know,
we have this interesting conversation about geography,
and that's actually taken place.
That same ah,
conversation in,
like,
three episodes on Hustle now.
So that was really interesting,
Very compelling stuff.
I think the world is sort of changing as it relates to geography,
like mattering to your career and to design.
So that was cool.
And then,
um,
this one night alcohol may or may not have been involved.
I don't really know,
but for some reason,
uh,
actually,
I think it was all of us and plus,
like,
one extra person that we didn't know,
um,
we decided to make one of those old school origami like like a cootie catcher.
That's a picker.
Yeah,
that's what we call that a country.
That's what we called it in alleged school little cootie catcher thing where you put like yours,
no filters and like,
d like tea and then pick this and then,
like,
you have to do something stupid like whenever you lift up the things that was really,
really fun.
And I thought it was like,
Ah,
you know,
like a good example of like,
how you can get to know people stuff.
But also,
it was like none of us grew up around each other.
All of us have seen that.
You know,
this is before the internet.
So I thought that was so cool is like,
01 of those things.
Yeah.
And we just like,
what?
Went up.
Like everybody knew exactly the format.
Yeah,
it was.
It was a lot of fun.
Um,
I was surprised how many people actually participated in that Because it was just really random.
Like
a stranger rink. You know, like, alcohol May or may not Theo. You a push up? Yeah, Like jazz hands.
Somebody did. Somebody had to do. Ah, teapot. I'm a little teapot e i e
i e I may or may not have that at the house. Oh,
man, you say keep away. I think that's all I have it. Have it, I'm afraid. Yeah, um I kind of thought I'd do some relaxing out it up, occurrence. But when I got home, I was super tired from just like I'm a social person. But that much so sureness like made me feel very tired. So we came to stop by way, came home and south eyes going on. Uh, that's true. That was just
like I'm catching up. Yeah, it still hurts. Oh, sorry.
Do you? That sucks anyway. A man. I think that's about it. Um, guess Have any closing ceremonies t
say no? I just wantto I guess my final thought is that I hope that Dan keeps it going because I think that it was really inspiring really awesome. And to be able to kind of open it up to more people in the community. You know, I think a lot of designers and just people in general would really benefit from it.
So,
you know,
he could jokes.
Well Oh,
crap.
What did I You can't alarms you didn't want to Cool.
Do you think you guys for sharing your experience?

I'm sure you've all heard of envisioned.
The product is practically synonymous with screen design.
We're stuck.
That envision is now a sponsor of Hustle.
Something we love about envision is that they are so highly involved in the community.
These guys really care about where design is going and the support creative loads of design.
Resource is you like kids designed process and interview articles on their block,
which is great for just general inspiration when building products.
Aside from being a great prototyping tool,
they also have features for a project management,
creating mood boards and presentations,
live collaborative screen share ings and like a 1,000,000 other useful things.
I literally do not have enough time t even list all their features,
but they pretty much got what you need.
Bottom line,
they don't just want you to be a user.
They want to empower you with their tools so that you can do your best work.
And I think that's pretty cool.
Overall takeaway.
