What Does This Podcast Will Kill You Say Childhood Was Like Before Vaccines?
This Podcast Will Kill You, in the episode Let's Hear It for Maurice, shares a first-person account of the years before routine vaccines. The speaker is the second-to-last of 13 siblings, born to poor immigrant parents. Five of those siblings died in infancy of diseases later prevented by vaccines: three from pertussis and two from measles. Their mother still talked about those deaths years later. The speaker says losing several children was common then, and remembers hearing the whoop of pertussis each winter and spring in movie theaters, school assemblies, and other gatherings. Today few people have ever heard that whoop, and those who have forget.
