Notes

  1. On Beyond 6 Seconds, Carolyn Kiel introduces Kyle Elliott of CaffeinatedKyle.com, a coach who helps people find a job they love or can tolerate. He belongs to the invite-only Forbes Coaches Council and has been published in Forbes, The Muse, and Fast Company. He was a Denny's server, studied nursing, then health education, health-care administration, and public administration for nonprofits. He had worked full time since 16. Friends asked him to fix resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles. The side hustle became the business when he needed rent in college. He drinks about three coffees a day, and a Starbucks stop is twenty minutes of self-care he can repeat in any city.

  2. He really takes time to get to know clients. They could be in need of resume assistance, determining what they want to do with their lives, or simply in need of help understanding how to engage in self-care.

  3. It is often times knowing how to ask the right questions. Giving people answers is not necessarily a solution to problems, but asking challenging questions that prompts people to think critically allows them to come to their own conclusions.

  4. Carolyn Kiel asks Kyle Elliott of CaffeinatedKyle.com whether networking is part of a search that works. He says yes, constantly. A vast majority of jobs, he says, are filled through connections. He lives on LinkedIn, but the step that matters is off LinkedIn: a phone call or a coffee, and actually getting to know the person. Build the relationship before you need it, so you can later ask for help or for a referral. Four of his own jobs came that way, and many of his clients' jobs too. Kiel adds that the useful version is asking questions, not opening with a request.

  5. It is very much about building relationships. Individuals cannot go into networking simply for the purpose of wanting something. Networking success is getting to know someone and hearing their true story.

  6. Visit the website for a free 5-day job search course, which overviews resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn, networking, etc. Find Kyle on social media and connect with him to begin a relationship.
