Dr. Guy Winch...how to cope with the loss of a pet (National Dog Day special episode)

Why is there stigma associated with how we cope with the loss of a pet? It seems like we can't get it right: we're judged for grieving the death of the animal too much ('it's just a pet!') or too little ('he/she is getting a new dog already?').

What can we do to heal and move forward from it? Why does it feel like we never fully get over it?

In honor of National Dog Day, we are bringing back one of our favorite episodes with Dr. Guy Winch, licensed psychologist and in-demand keynote speaker to talk about healing from the loss of a pet. Dr. Winch was with us previously to discuss his book "How to Fix a Broken Heart", which aims to help people cope about a breakup or death of someone they love; that someone can be a pet and the loss is devastating.

You can watch his compelling TED talk, "Why we all need to practice emotional first aid", which has gathered more than six and a half million views, at https://www.ted.com/talks/guy_winch_the_case_for_emotional_hygiene. His website is http://www.guywinch.com.
