Why Don't The Fish Die When A Lake Freezes?
Water on the surface gets cold, shrinks, becomes denser, and falls to the bottom down to about four degrees Celsius. As it goes from 40 toward 20 degrees Celsius, the freezing point, it expands and stays on top. The frozen top insulates the water below, so the fish don't die.
