Back to #418 Phil Knight: Founder of Nike, with David Senra.

How Did Phil Knight Start Nike?

David Senra says Nike started when one Japanese company sent Phil Knight 12 pairs of running shoes to sell in Oregon. About a year later, the shoes arrived. Knight was in his 20s and still living at home. Senra reads Knight's reaction that the shoes were beautiful. Knight sent two pairs to his old track coach at Oregon, Bill Bowerman, because Bowerman was the person who first made him think about what people put on their feet.

Bowerman was a coach, a motivator, and a leader of young men, and he treated shoes as the piece of gear that decided how his runners developed. Reading Knight, Senra says there would not be a Nike without Knight being coached by Bowerman and then choosing him as co-founder and partner.
