What Return Did Claude Shannon Earn on Stocks?

David Senra, reading Fortune's Formula, says Claude Shannon's stock portfolio returned 28% a year from the late 1950s through 1986. In 1986, Barron's ranked the recent performance of 77 money managers. Shannon had done better than all but three of them, and the article never mentioned him. Those managers were mostly firms with up to 100 people. Shannon worked with his wife and an Apple II.

Barron's also reported on the recent performance of 1,026 funds. Shannon's return was higher than 1,025 of them, over 30 years. His interest in money resembled his other passions. He was not out to accrue wealth for its own sake, and he had no burning desire for the finer things. Money created markets and math puzzles, problems that could be analyzed, interpreted, and played out.
