What Finance Tasks Will OpenAI Take on in 2027?
Joseph Kim says OpenAI will start to move finance work up the stack in 2027, from the task a junior analyst can do, to some of the tasks an associate can do, to some of the tasks an MD would do. A lot of the low-hanging fruit is already solved. Higher on the chain, the objectives become much fuzzier, so training the model gets more difficult from a research perspective. The problem is not impossible.
The product has to match what the model can do today. It is quite good at concrete instructions: build a slide, make it look good, use a template. There is also a strong preference to make the model good at work humans are not good at or do not like. A lot of the people he talks to really do not like building Excel models. The work is tedious, very detail-oriented, and easy to get wrong. Slides are similar, with logos copied and placed very precisely on a specific part of the page. A slide is clearly good or bad, or clearly something you would put in front of the client or not. An investment idea is different. It would take three years of waiting to give a clear, concrete answer of what the market has done.
Matching humans takes a lot of research focus, a lot of wonderful data, and a lot of feedback from experts in the field, the P99.9 type of feedback. It also takes continued scaling of the base model and research labs treating the problem as important to solve. On his team, he is making finance an area of focus and priority for OpenAI, and he feels confident they will make a lot of strides in 2027.
