Why Did Napoleon Dictate Josephine's Water Cure?
David Senra, reading The Mind of Napoleon, says Napoleon dictated Josephine's water cure himself. Josephine was leaving the next day. Napoleon told the person taking dictation that he must dictate her itinerary and outline her conduct. The dictation filled 21 large sheets of paper.
The line just before that story says the art consists in making others work rather than wearing oneself out. An editor in the book calls the line good advice, then points to the water cure as proof that Napoleon could not leave even trivial details to others. Napoleon's mind moved faster than his hand, so he dictated and had other people write as much as possible, and he still laid out the trip.
Senra calls the clash a contradiction, not a critique. A clean rule and a refusal to follow it show up in ordinary people too. He calls Napoleon one of history's greatest micromanagers.
