Back to #432 The Mind of Napoleon.
Why Did Napoleon Say a Revolution Cannot Be Stopped?
David Senra, reading a repeated line in The Mind of Napoleon, says a revolution cannot be stopped, because a revolution can be neither made nor stopped. The only thing that can be done is for one or several of its children to give it a direction.
On a first reading many years ago, Senra marked changes that could not be stopped, because somebody eventually takes advantage of them. He names the internet, human-powered flight, and mass-produced automobiles with internal combustion engines as changes that remade the world. He puts artificial intelligence in that same class, another revolution that cannot be made or stopped.
The second sentence is the part Senra keeps. One or several of the revolution's children give the revolution a direction. That is the only move the line allows.
