Why Does Filming a Mountain Climb Block the Experience?
Robert Greene says filming a mountain climb blocks the experience, because looking through a camera and navigating the route means the climber never experiences the mountain itself.
Ancient ancestors looked at plants coming up out of the ground and at enormous mastodons and bears twice the size of what bears are now. They were obsessed with what is inhuman, and religions and spirituality started from life that dies and then reemerges and from large animals being created beyond people. A mountain can open that same feeling. The climber is on rock millions of years old that predates humans and emerged out of the ground, moving into the sky almost like a bird. Oxygen levels change and the brain changes. Mountain climbers, especially in rock climbing, have reported some of the most sublime experiences because at every moment they could die, and the intensity of life and death turns the climb into an addiction.
Technology is a major roadblock to the sublime, though it does not have to stay one. He looks online at new telescopes and images from NASA of the universe, including the Hubble and the Vera Rubin telescope, because he cannot climb into the sky and see them directly. The images are utterly sublime when the point is the experience alone, not reporting them back, influencing other people, or feeding an ego and followers.
