Back to Claude Code’s Next Era — Thariq Shihipar, Anthropic, with Thariq Shihipar & Vibhu Sapra.

What Does Thariq Shihipar Think About AI Doom?

Thariq Shihipar has a fairly low probability of doom, and he can only speak for himself. Anthropic has a diversity of opinions and many different ways to talk about the risk. His mental model is that people can collaborate on hard problems. Nuclear proliferation is the example of how people already collaborated on a hard problem, and he has faith in that kind of collaboration.

He still treats the risk as a hard problem. He does not know how to assign probabilities to events, and he calls assigning them hard to do. His overall view is that people are very resilient and adaptable, and sharing the information is the first step. He is excited that the discussion has become broad and that everyone has leaned in on pacing the frontier. The shift did not seem likely last year. The reason for the work is the chance of enormous benefits.

  11. How Does Claude Catch Jailbreaks With Probes?Thariq Shihipar says Claude catches jailbreaks by reading internal activations, because looking only at the input is not enough.
  12. How Does Claude Code Auto Mode Check Permissions?Thariq Shihipar says Claude Code auto mode checks whether an agent is acting inside the permission the user gave, while probes judge whether the intent itself…
