What Is the Most Important Claude Code Skill?

Thariq Shihipar says the most important skill for Claude Code is a mental model of Claude: how Claude thinks, what Claude can do well, what Claude can one-shot, and what Claude cannot. Prompting is the meta skill, and it is not a trivial one.

Many people say prompting does not matter and that one sentence is enough for Claude to do the work. Prompting is closer to public speaking or writing for a specific audience, and that audience is Claude. Short prompts look effortless when the person already has a strong mental model of Claude and of the codebase. The skill ceiling is high, so time spent prompting and building intuition for how the agents work is important.

The next skill is finding what you do not know or have not written down, and learning about different things.
