Why Doesn't Streptococcus Mutans Cause Tooth Decay in Everyone?

Kishore Nannapaneni tells Simulation that Streptococcus mutans is the bacterium linked to caries, or tooth decay, and that everybody has it. It turns pathogenic only with a certain mix of other bacteria, which is also how he separates the microbiomes behind bad breath, tooth decay, and gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontitis. He and Patrick Schwientek, with two other Oralta co-founders, David Drake and Jeffrey Banas, both long-time professors at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry with more than 30 years in oral microbiology, went through the literature for microbes that work together. They landed on a proprietary mix of five strains. The first product is aimed at bad breath, not yet at gum disease and decay.
