Does Union Square Ventures Need Trillion-dollar Winners?
Fred Wilson says Union Square Ventures does not need to underwrite to a trillion dollars. A company has to look like a market that can get bigger. Treating today's market size as fixed usually means the investment does not make sense. There was a time when a company worth half a billion dollars was enough for a yes, and then that number moved to a billion. A trillion is not the bar.
If the biggest winners are in the single-digit billions, the fund size and the ownership can still produce healthy returns for the partners. That is where it has been. Some outliers reached $50 billion or $100 billion. A lot of the biggest winners have been in the $10 billion range, and that range produced enormous returns for the firm.
