Why Does Joe Rogan Want Comedy Kept Disrespected?

at 1:31:58

From the episode: #2565 - Michael Douglas

Answer

Joe Rogan says comedy should stay the underdog and should be disrespected. People are still going to want to see it and love it. Too much love, respect, and too many awards water comedy down until it becomes something that tries to please everybody. Hate from some people and love from others keeps comedy in the right place. The people who practice it still have to treat it with respect.

In Austin he bought a club and started one as a home for working comedians, especially the young ones coming up. A talent coordinator watches the open mics, and there are two nights of them. Every Monday they do a show he calls the most popular live comedy show in the country. People get one minute of standup, then a panel of professional comedians talks to them. Many of them have launched careers from the show and are doing really well. Some have to bring a new minute every week and perform it in front of the whole world, which forces them to sit down and write, the part of the job comics do not like. The club pays comics well and is built to pump up the art form.

Joe Rogan says they might succeed sometimes and fail others. So far it is going great, and plenty of people still hate the place while plenty of people love it.
