On To Live and Die in LA, Neil Strauss reconstructs the weeks before Adea Shabani vanished on February 23, 2018. After New Year's in Tulum with her ex-boyfriend Ivan, she and Chris Spotz reunited. He promised to leave his fiancée, Mary Elmalak, and proposed. By early February they were applying for a two-bedroom lease, with a March 1 move-in.
Around February 12, Adea told friends she and Chris had been intimate without protection, and that she was happy she might be carrying his child. On Valentine's Day he spent the evening with Mary, then left at 10 p.m. to meet Adea at the restaurant Isabel.
