Back to European Defense Sovereignty Starts in the Factory: Stark’s Uwe Horstmann and Johannes Schaback, with Uwe Horstmann & Johannes Schaback.

Why Is Stark a Good First Defense Job?

Johannes Schaback says Stark is a good first home for people who want to apply their skills to defense for the first time, because the company is as much a defense company as a high-growth tech company and understands both sides.

Stark looks for people in classic industry, at universities, in startups, and inside governmental institutions. The functions are broad enough that talent has to come from everywhere, whether someone is very senior or very junior. An existing established prime usually brings knowledge that is very valuable, and the startup mindset is equally important, even when people arrive from different domains and different cultures. Programs build products for the outside world and are cross-functional. Within each function, function heads bring consistency across electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and the other functions, and they build communities of practice inside the cross-functional teams. Knowledge, best practices, tooling decisions, AI approaches, AI workflows, skills, and MCPs move across the company that way.

A few years ago, joining defense was not something people in the tech and startup community would do. All over Europe, people now see defense as a generational task, including people who had no touchpoint with defense before. Stark can be their first touchpoint.
