What Happens to Ads When Agents Replace People?
Parag Agrawal says the ad-supported web breaks when agents show up instead of people, because a publisher cannot charge for that visit. Ads became the dominant model on a human web: most Google queries lose money, a smaller share earns it back, and that differential pricing is why Google search and Twitter can be free.
A site still has a business built for human attention. It may pay to attract more people, then cut an agent off. A subscription publisher that converts some human visitors cannot tell whether an agent will ever subscribe or will only take the content. The contracts labs sign for training, liability, and access at inference time are fixed fees, so they do not grow when inference grows, and publishers do not expect their share to hold at renewal. The properties he wants instead come from ads: pay more for higher-value content and for higher-value work done with it, at scale rather than as one-off deals.
