Back to What will computer chips look like in 2045?, with Chris Auth & Kevin Fischer.

What Is an Intel Hotbox?

Kevin Fischer says an Intel hotbox is a priority grade for one lot, a block of silicon, so that lot races through the fab ahead of everything else.

The factory uses a tiered system of hotboxes, and every grade goes a little bit faster. Hotbox one is the highest grade. It gets priority at every tool. That speed is a drag on the rest of the factory, because the tools are used inefficiently so one experiment can go extremely fast. The comparison is a highway with one lane reserved for a carpool everyone else could use. Everyone clears that lane except for one experiment, and that experiment races down the highway. People who run the factory dislike the lane for that reason.

  10. Why Will Intel Buy More Chipmaking Tools?Pushkar Ranade says Intel will invest more in chipmaking tools, and would have bought more a year ago if today's AI demand had been clear then.
