Why Did Koenigsegg Start When the Sports Car Was Dead?
David Senra reads Christian von Koenigsegg on starting without an inherited way to build a car. Koenigsegg had no heritage telling him what the next step had to be. He could open a book and dream up the car he thought would be perfect. He made everything by hand. A labor-intensive process made the company more adaptable, because there were no huge production lines or machines to change when the model changed. Perfecting the curves took craftsmanship. In a documentary, the person shaping those curves says he feels them by hand.
He started the company in 1994, during an economic downturn, when the media said the sports car was dead and many famous brands were struggling. Koenigsegg's answer was that he is extremely stubborn and does not like to give up. He was going to build his car anyway. It was worth it even if it took everything he had. He needed to get it out of his system, and he believed he could build a car that someone would want to buy.
