Why Does Koenigsegg Build Parts In-house?
David Senra reads Christian von Koenigsegg on why the company builds so many parts itself. It started because Koenigsegg could not afford a large engineering house and did not have the budget. Doing the work inside the company turned out to be possible, and better. They make their own wheels, brake calipers, seats, wings, mirrors, electronic controllers, software, cloud connectivity, and infotainment systems. There is very little they do not do. They do it because they can, and because they can improve on what already exists.
Senra saw a line printed on one of those parts: "It is impossible to lead by following. Therefore, I am different." Koenigsegg also describes weighing every nut and bolt. When cutting more weight looks impossible, they take a few millimeters off each screw, change an aluminum bracket, or thin out part of the body. He studied how other people built cars, asked why they did it that way, and then worked out his own way. He calls that approach crazy, and he hopes Koenigsegg's way is better.
