Why Did Arnold Schwarzenegger Start the Split Routine?
David Senra describes how Arnold Schwarzenegger got into the split routine because it was expedient. There was no initial theory involved. He had almost no theoretical knowledge. The knowledge was practical, built through trial and error and experimentation, and many of the things he was learning in the 70s people still use today.
He had to live a split life, acting as an instructor to health club clients on one hand and training himself for the Mr. Universe title on the other. It was frustrating. People who would never benefit from what he told them kept taking his time. They paid and came to the gym, but the effort was disgusting and superficial. They merely went through the motions, doing sissy workouts and pampering themselves. He wanted the wasted hours for his own training.
He trained both morning and evening, from 9 to 11 in the morning and again from 7 to 9 at night. He could not believe the results. Morning and evening training was the beginning of the split routine that later became famous.
