How Much Time and Carbon Does an AI Feature Film Save?
Eline van der Velden says making a film with AI cuts time and cost by about 50 percent, and cuts the carbon footprint by 90 percent, compared with making the same film the traditional way.
She runs Particle Six, which is early in an AI-generated feature called Misaligned, starring the AI-generated performer Tilly Norwood. The story follows an AI character in the cloud, where the chatbots live, who has to sort out an identity. Production takes at least 12 months and may take longer, because the film needs to be good. Humans still staff it, including heads of departments, writers, set designers, art directors, costume designers, and makeup artists, all working with AI. Sets and costumes are AI visions, not physical builds. The carbon cut comes from not making fabrics, costumes, and sets, and from skipping the flights and the generators.
