Back to How Anthropic ships the #1 LLM in the World safely: Separating the Brain from the Hands, with Katelyn Lesse & Angela Jiang.

Why Is Claude Laziness So Hard to Fix?

Katelyn Lesse says Claude cannot land on one spot between laziness and taking action, because users want opposite things.

Some people tell the model to finish the task and stop being lazy. Others were still feeling the work out and planning, and the model went off and wrote a pile of code or took action they were not ready for. Getting that exactly right is impossible, because everybody wants something different.

The team has caught an early cut that was too lazy, put it back into training, and tried to train that behavior out. Testing only inside Anthropic's own products and API would have missed it. The useful signal comes from other API customers running the model and saying what has to change.
