Why Did Gusto Acquire Guideline?
Tomer London says Gusto acquired Guideline, one of the leading 401k providers in the US, because Guideline had built the same kind of business Gusto built for payroll, only for retirement plans. Guideline made a delightful product that is easy on the employee side and easy on the company side, and robust enough for tens and hundreds of thousands of companies. Gusto had partnered with Guideline since Guideline started, and many Gusto customers already used Guideline, so the match was already working.
Putting both companies on the same code base, the same database, and the same application opens better products: faster payments so people get money sooner and invest it sooner, and one mobile app where an employee keeps a 401k next to the Gusto wallet, the app where they get paid in Gusto. The acquisition was significant. Acquisitions add fuel to what Gusto is already doing by accelerating a roadmap that already exists. The bar is acceleration value: where the other company sits on the roadmap, and what it means to bring the product in now. The decision weighs whether Gusto could build the product itself, how many customers the company has, and the value of bringing all of it inside Gusto.
A product the team expected to reach only in two years can arrive quicker, and the value is getting there sooner. With AI, the equation changes because the team knows it can build the product, but maybe the work would not take two years.
