How Did Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger Bond as Cofounders?
Kevin Systrom told Partners that most cofounder pairs fight and split, so planning another company with Mike Krieger was unusual. He compared the bond to people who had been through a hard posting together, with the caveat that Instagram was not that kind of stakes. Rivals had tried to kill the company and push one of them aside. After an exhausting argument with an investor, they sat in a bad restaurant on Market Street in San Francisco and ordered the greasiest thing on the menu. It was a low for the company and a high for him. Still liking each other after a year of long days, he said, is not something a couple of cafe prototypes can predict.

Why Did Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger Leave Instagram and Facebook?
Mike Krieger told Partners that he and Kevin Systrom stayed six years after Facebook bought Instagram, each only because the other was still there. Every January he chose again whether to stay. At 18 he had promised himself distinct years, not one year on repeat, and the learning had started to diminish. Over dinner he said it might be time to leave. During Kevin's paternity leave he ran part of the CEO job for a couple of months and found he did not want it. He wanted to be bad at something again. They left with no next company, and rest came first. It was their longest silence in nine years.

Why Did Instagram Sell to Facebook
The founders of Instagram really did not want to sell and to become a part of some other large company, but when Facebook offered a Billion dollars for a company with 11 employees that's only been around for a year, and proposed for Instagram to stay as independent entity inside Facebook, it felt right.

How Does Kevin Systrom Disagree With Mike Krieger Without a Fight?
Mike Krieger said on Partners that he and Kevin Systrom raised their voices once, for about 30 seconds. Early on, Krieger wanted a day at home so he could code all night. Systrom wanted a shared office. Krieger tried it, and they moved faster in the same room. Systrom will not agree just to be nice, and he will not make you feel bad for disagreeing. He says what he wants and asks why you see it differently. He cares about character and follow-through, not a wrong tool or a bug. Cofounder was the real title. CEO and CTO were labels for events, and someone still has to break a tie.

What Was the Turning Point for Instagram
Mike and Kevin had been working on Bourbon for awhile, and one day when meeting their early investor, they realized that the application was too complex and lacked focus; they could not even explain what it did.
They went back to the office, sat in front of a white board and stripped everything away, focusing just on the core components that would effectively become Instagram.
In the course of next two weeks the first version of Instagram was born.

How Did Kevin Systrom Find His Instagram Co-founder Mike
Kevin's first investor gave him money and instructed Kevin to find a co-founder because in his mind, the best companies in the world all had co-founders. A team was just more likely to succeed than a solo founder.
Kevin had met Mike Krieger before and was impressed with him, so next time they met, Kevin inevitably pitched the idea.
They met up for a day and prototype-worked together on a fake project. That was an enjoyable experience. Eventually, the two partnered up.

What Was Bourbon
It was a check-in app that let you check in a different. It was a way of sharing what you were up to and where you were with the twist that you could add photos and videos to it, which in 2009 was actually the only one to do that. Even though you had to jump through all these hoops to upload a photo on bourbon, people were doing it.

Why Were Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger a Good Instagram Match?
Kevin Systrom told the Partners podcast that he and Mike Krieger both wanted to make things, and Systrom's dream was a product used by a huge number of people. Krieger was the friend with a useful answer, and he spent weekends building rather than scrolling Facebook. Systrom was working on Burbn, a 2009 check-in app that could carry photos, and an investor offered $50,000 if he would find a cofounder, pointing at pairs behind Google and YouTube. They tested the partnership at a cafe near Krieger's house by splitting a made-up project for one night. At the Caltrain station, before Krieger left for his job, Systrom asked him to join Burbn. Krieger's answer was "Count me interested."
