Why Does a Father on the 2 Cent Dad Podcast Spend the Last Year or Two Teaching His Kids Assets, Liabilities, and Credit While Telling Them to Follow the Path Best for Them?
On the show, a father says his kids already have a strong work ethic and push themselves pretty hard, so he does not think he needs to do much more on work ethic. For the last year or two, ever since the kids got old enough to start grasping the concept, he has been talking with them about basic ideas of how to manage money. He says families do not talk enough with kids about money.
He covers assets and liabilities and what they mean in life, and how other people's money, in terms of credit, can do good things or bad things. He also tells the kids they do not have to follow anybody's script about their life. They do not have to go to the university and then get a job at some big company and expect to stay there for the rest of their life, unless they want to. They can start their own businesses, go freelance, go into research, or be professors, and they have to do the thing that fits their personality and the direction they want to go in life.
He says outside messages say the contrary. The standing message is you have to go to a good university or you cannot get a good job. The new message will be you should never go to university or you cannot get a good job. The real message he gives is to follow the path best for you, and you are going to learn over time what the path is.
