Back to Inside Anthropic’s trillion-dollar AI gamble, with Joey Brookhart.
What Is Anthropic's Annual Recurring Revenue?
Joey Brookhart says Anthropic's S-1 shows a company that scaled, with capital efficiency, to a valuation above a trillion dollars and more than $70 billion in annual recurring revenue in a short time. Gross margins, compute margins, and free cash flow are what investors want to see, and there is not much in the filing to nitpick. Semiconductor, neocloud, and compute stocks rallied over the two days after it. Some listeners to the earlier investor day had been disappointed by the September ARR figures.
The market is still narrow. The two leading labs together are at $120 billion of annual recurring revenue, and the top 1% of customers are the ones spending $100,000 or $50,000 per employee. The broader Fortune 500 and Global 2000 are not spending much, even with large IT budgets. A lot of Anthropic's spending is coding, so the business is close to a single vertical. A normal enterprise budget cycle has not really run through one of these labs yet, because the acceleration started this year.
Nilay Patel raises Dario Amodei's path to a trillion dollars in revenue. That takes more than coding. Cybersecurity can look like coding, with eight-figure contracts, and biology is another opening. A trillion means moving some white-collar work from side help toward replacing labor. Few other verticals are ready to move the number.
