What Did Steve Jobs Learn From Failing at NeXT?

David Senra, reading Geoffrey Cain, says NeXT taught Steve Jobs something he never learned at Apple: how to turn failure into fuel.

Companies told NeXT it might be the biggest breakthrough in the computer industry in a decade. Jobs still would not drop the hardware and sell software, even when that shift was obvious to the people around him. He had learned that the best people were worth the wait. If he met somebody that good and compromised, he would be settling for second best, so he kept at the hire instead of taking a lesser person.

A chief operating officer he had waited for later tried to sell NeXT behind his back. Jobs still refused to stop selling hardware. The company's finances then got so bad that he had no other choice. That squeeze is the education Cain says Apple never gave him.
