Why Do Design Partnerships Repel Serious Buyers?

Rob Snyder says a free design partnership is a negative signal to people who actually have pull and a positive signal to people who do not. Offering to build the product together, figure it out along the way, and skip the charge turns a buyer who needs the problem solved right now into someone helping the startup build the product. He calls that shooting yourself in the foot, because the relationship does not lead to stuff that actually sells and works.

The move is to sell directly, even before a full platform is ready, by making the offer more service shaped. Startups tell a buyer they will have an AI product manager who can do the job for now, delivered by the team while the product works behind the scenes. The buyer is not expecting an enterprise grade platform ready next week. The team validates that real pull is there and figures out what to build while delivering a mix of manually and automated work.
