Why Did Misha Laskin Get Into Physics?
Misha Laskin got interested in physics after he moved to the United States as a kid. His family moved to a rural part of Washington State, he had a lot of time on his hands, and that is when the interest took hold.
He treats the Hanford site as one possible piece of it. The area was one of the Manhattan Project places, the Hanford site where the plutonium was enriched, so it already had a rich history of physics. What he really liked was that physics is a fundamental science, based on simple principles that could explain most of what people observe, and that it sits at the root of technologies used every day. He saw physics as the fundamental science of the 20th century.
The first computer program, as he tells it, was brought forth by physicists. It was the ENIAC program at the Institute of Advanced Study, in the World War II era, when computers were first used to calculate ballistic missile coordinates.
