Where Do Benedicte Bossute's Montessori Standards Come From?

Jennifer Gonzalez asks Benedicte Bossute, lead teacher at the Montessori Elementary School of Bowling Green, where her standards come from. Bossute looks at state standards and the Montessori framework, then at the progression built into the materials. She does not treat success as a one-year ladder. She batches the work in a three-year span, about ages three to six. A child can be invited into multi-base work, but Bossute wants number value and base ten understood first. She describes a child on the checkerboard for at least 90 minutes. The rule is not to interrupt that concentration, while still noticing the child who never touches the material.
