How Do You Break the Cycle of Criticism in a Relationship?
Harville Hendrix says a couple breaks a cycle of criticism by taking unrelenting negative scrutiny out of the relationship and replacing ordinary argument with a conversation in which both people listen and talk without criticizing.
In the third session, a New York therapist nearly yelled that he and Helen LaKelly Hunt were the couple from hell and untreatable, ended the work, and returned the money. The same morning, a book called Astrology for Couples said the Virgo and Aquarius pairing has the least chance of all couples in that system for a happy relationship, because of their unrelenting scrutiny of each other. Hunt, the initiator in the relationship, proposed putting the divorce on hold, taking the diagnosis as a challenge, and practicing the process they taught. They gave themselves one year and would stop the divorce only if both felt safe and were regularly experiencing joyful aliveness with each other.
Each day on a calendar got a check when it was free of negativity and an X when it was not, and each week they talked in a way that was not a parallel monologue, where each person waits to refute the other. The replacement is listening and talking without criticizing or judgment, and connecting beyond differences. It starts by asking whether now is a good time, then mirroring, validation, and empathy. After a few weeks, both said they felt neither safe nor visible.
