How Does Satya Nadella Treat the AI Rush?
Mustafa Suleyman says Satya Nadella, who runs Microsoft, treated the rush ahead as a question of governance and engineering execution. The first move is to get the basics right.
Verifiably safe containers have to stop data from leaking and have to stop an AI from taking actions it has not been given permission to take. As soon as companies build in that way, they have to disclose problems, and if problems keep showing up, a pause would follow. Nadella's approach is common sense from somebody who has been doing the work for a long time. The president has said that if companies believe they are building models which are unsafe, they should stop, and that is where things stand. All of the companies keep talking to one another, disclosing to one another, and swapping ideas about how to interpret the risk and when they might need to collectively slow down. Different people have different interpretations about what the harm is today. Open, transparent work is better, and everybody is now expected to disclose publicly, quickly, and transparently if they have alignment and containment issues.
