Why Did Mustafa Suleyman Leave Google?
Mustafa Suleyman left Google in 2022 to build a conversational companion that could offer emotional support, teach, and stay deeply knowledgeable.
He had worked at Google with a small group on Lambda, a conversational chatbot about a year before ChatGPT. They tried very hard to get Google to release it. Google was nervous about putting it out and sat on it for ages. He and a couple of other people from the project left in 2022 and built their own AIs, including Pi. He wanted a companion that was super intelligent, knowledgeable, and strong at education and teaching. It took off and grew quickly. It was one of the first AIs with search grounding in the answers, so it could look up a sports score in real time. The launch came three months after ChatGPT, and ChatGPT had already gone exponential. Microsoft then bought them.
AI already works as a personal counselor. Many people use it for advice, support with making decisions, and feedback.
