What Does Eve Mean in Hebrew?
Jordan B. Peterson says the word Eve, in Hebrew, means something like combatant and ally in a military struggle. To be married is to have someone with you so you can battle as a unity against the social and natural catastrophes of life, while each of you puts the other on the edge so both people develop and the relationship develops too.
The reason for that edge is further development. With kids, the aim is not to pack them in styrofoam and store them in the basement where nothing can damage them. A child should be out contending with the world, striving upward and expanding past the current limits of ability. A wise, encouraging parent pushes the child to the edge. Push too far and the child falls off. Fail to push far enough and the child does not develop as thoroughly as they might. Part of raising a child is setting the precise amount of encouraging challenge. An adventurous, exploratory child needs a little restriction, because that child might bite off more than they can chew. A timid child, less prone to explore, needs a harder push. Friendship works the same way. Developing a relationship is finding the balance between security and encouraging challenge that best develops the person, and a marriage is that balance lived as ally and combatant.
