Should Everyone Get a Blood Test for Cancer?
Siddhartha Mukherjee says blood tests that can find some cancers early are probably not going to work if they are used on everyone, with no selection for people at high risk or for people who have already had cancer.
He says those tests lead to false positives, extra biopsies, and more follow-up tests, and that they are unlikely to lower deaths from cancer. Used in people who carry genetic mutations that raise risk, or in people who have had cancer before, he says the same tests may yield very important results. That "may" is his, not a promise that the tests work.
