How Does a 1981 Home Depot Stake Compare to Apple?

Ben Gilbert says a $1,000 stake in Home Depot from the 1981 public offering would beat the same stake in Apple, which went public one year earlier as Apple Computer. With dividends reinvested, Home Depot compounded at nearly 25% a year for 45 years.

The record makes Home Depot the number one performing stock in the S&P 500 in total investment return from the day it went public to today. The $1,000 would be worth about $17 million. The same $1,000 bought in the S&P 500 would be worth $170,000. Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal love Vanguard index funds, so they set the Home Depot result next to the index on purpose. A 45-year hold turned the original $1,000 into about $17 million instead of $170,000.
