Why Did No One Know What To Do With The New Middle-class Mode Of Work?
Reading Bennett shows that no one knew what to do with this new mode of work. Lawyers made up the upper middle class, with townhouses in London and access to some of the same clubs as the upper class living off inherited wealth. There was not much of a middle class, then artisans and shopkeepers, then the lower class, until the late 19th century brought a middle class.
