Why Does a Hard Hit to the Head Cause Loss of Neurons?

Elon Musk says repeated hard hits to the head cause brain damage because the brain has the consistency of jello and the skull is hard like a coconut. The brain hits the side of the skull. A quarter inch of subarachnoid space separates the brain and the skull. Enough force from a hit causes loss of neurons.
