Mars needs maybe a million people to become self sustaining because a massive base of industry must be recreated or the colony will die out if spaceships from Earth stop coming. People live at the top of a vast pyramid of industry. Missing a critical ingredient means eventual failure like having everything except vitamin C. Millions of tons of cargo must be delivered to Mars.
