Why Does the Permian Extinction Stand Out in the Fossil Record?
Five great extinction events appear in the fossil record. A great extinction event destroys 70 or 80 percent of all species on Earth. The Permian extinction destroyed maybe 90 or 95 percent of all species on Earth. Most of what remained after the Permian extinction were sponges and fungi. No large life survived the Permian extinction.
