How Do Frontier AI Models Keep Pricing Power?
Martin Casado says frontier AI models keep pricing power because the market is still large and growing, and buyers want the smartest model. Three years of data show that being even slightly better than the next model brings tremendous pricing power. The best frontier models take 80% or more of the market, dollar weighted, and demand looks basically unlimited.
Penetration is still tiny: about 0.1%, or something close to it. Enterprises are said to be about 3% penetrated, and the budget share is about 1% or less. Nothing structural changes who gets paid as long as the market keeps growing and does not saturate. If pockets of the market saturate, or growth slows for another reason, the outcome is unknown. One real possibility is that the value crashes back into open source. Software has always kept a long tail of retention. A model does not.
Graphs from pitches put a model's life at three to six months. Put out the model everyone wants, then slip three months over a regulatory issue, a technical issue, or a breach, and losing the whole market is a real outcome. The typical answer he has been hearing is that a very high percentage of software coding tasks are already saturated, and that is the biggest market change.
