Why Did Erik Bernhardsson Wait Until His Mid-30s to Start Modal?
Erik Bernhardsson started Modal, his first company, at 36 or 37 because he never had quite enough confidence in himself, and a little of the money was missing too. He does not think he had ever necessarily wanted to start a company. He saw a big opportunity in the market, asked himself why no one else was doing such an obvious idea, and that led him to start Modal. Five years later, it has gone pretty well.
He looks at Stanford kids who are 21 and feels they maybe have too much confidence, already sure they will take over the world. The ideal age, in his view, is maybe 32, with a bit more experience in how to navigate people, hire people, and fire people. He does not know whether he would have been a good founder in his 20s, even though in hindsight he thinks maybe he should have started much earlier.
