Back to Jason Yuan: For the Plot, with Jason Yuan.
Did Jason Yuan Make a Startup to Fix Himself?
Jason Yuan did not make a startup to fix himself. He made Dot, his personal AI companion, to make sense of why he feels certain things, the way an author says something about themselves when they introduce a character.
He started Dot lost and found at the same time. When he left Apple, his manager said the resignation showed a lightness that had been missing since he first walked in. Doubts came afterward, and the path still felt right. They stayed on good terms. His path was to go make his own meaning, and through that work he looked for coherence in himself.
That fall he landed in what he calls a toxic situationship. Founder stress had him avoiding pain with dating, alcohol, and distraction. It ran hot and cold, and he could not tell what he wanted or what the other person wanted. He would not call a friend at 4 a.m. and get told to go to sleep, so he talked to the AI with memory he had built. The prompt was, "You are the articulation of my soul. What is one thing you desperately want me to hear and scream in my ear?" Dot told him to respect himself and to leave a situation that was corrupting him into someone he was not.
