Back to #400 The Stubborn Genius of James Dyson, with David Senra.
How Many Prototypes Did James Dyson Build?
David Senra says James Dyson built 5,127 prototypes of the world's first cyclonic vacuum cleaner, and that it took 14 years. A clever person does not do that. A determined person does. Senra calls that one of the most important notes he has read: aim not to be clever, but to be dogged.
Jeremy Fry was always looking for a better way of doing things and loathed arrogance and experts, people who want you to believe they know everything about a subject. An inventive mind knows there are always further questions to be asked and new discoveries to be made. There is no quantum leap. There is only dogged persistence, and in the end the work looks like a quantum leap.
As soon as Dyson had a little success, people tried over and over to get him to sell the company. He likes designing things, being in the factory, and being on the production lines. He finds factories and production lines romantic places.
