Back to #400 The Stubborn Genius of James Dyson, with David Senra.
Why Does James Dyson Refuse to Copy What Already Exists?
David Senra, reading James Dyson, says Dyson refuses to copy what already exists because following the herd is more dangerous than building something better.
The line comes from designer-engineer heroes Dyson names: the founder of Honda, the founders of Sony, the designer of the Mini, and the inventor of the jet engine. Do not copy the opposition. Do not worry about market research. Follow your own star. When Dyson did not follow that star, and did not have control, he was kicked out of his first company.
The best kind of business sells a product that works better and looks better than existing ones, at a high price, with a good margin, and in enormous volumes. That long-term investment looks high-risk. In the longer view it is not half as likely to prove hazardous to one's financial health as simply following the herd.
