Back to Tobi Lütke on the AI agent revolution and future of Shopify, with Tobi Lütke.

What Does Tobi Lütke Think About AI Risk?

Tobi Lütke thinks the positive effects of AI are going to be vastly higher than the negative effects, and his PDOOM is zero.

One core myth Western civilization is built on is the Promethean myth. Prometheus brought fire from Mount Olympus to humans, got the whole party going, and was doomed to torture forever. The myth casts a more powerful spell than people generally admit, leaving a strong sense that everything good has negative consequences of equal proportion. AI is potentially the most powerful thing humans will ever invent, or definitely one of the top few, so it is a lever for really good and really bad uses. On an individual level it will have an enormous positive influence on some people and a negative influence on others. All of that stands as a proviso, and the equal-proportion outcome usually does not play out that way.

PDOOM scenarios get no weight from him, because at the end of the day it is floating points, and there are still going to be consequences. For a technologist, dystopia is always just 30 years ago. Wi-Fi did not exist 30 years ago, and being sent 30 years back would seem horrible from today's perspective. The same climb keeps going, and things can get really, really, really great.
