Why Does Jimmy Carr Back Gambling on Yourself?
Jimmy Carr says the useful gamble is gambling on yourself, the big gamble in life, because taking a big gamble means you do not need the little gambles. Sports gambling is not the point, and neither is a cheap little dopamine hit whenever you need one.
Getting into comedy was lucky, and it was still a gamble: try a line and you get the dopamine. There are good ways to get it and bad ways, so the good ways are the ones to encourage. Human nature is fixed and flawed. Young men are going to want dopamine and risk, and the aim is to point them toward something useful. Gangs that shoot each other and deal drugs are terrible, but a lot of gangs are just young men together. He has set up youth clubs all around Great Britain with pool tables, jukeboxes, music, and booze. They are cool pubs, social places where young men should be together, and they check each other very well.
The drinking age should reflect reality rather than a wish. 21 in America is insane. 16 year olds drink. They should not be allowed to drink alone. Drinking should be a social thing.
